Dear me, Sue,
once again you have excelled yourself, if that is possible. Humour is definitely one of the ways of dealing with life's 'problems'. I am grateful to you that someone does feel happy talking about 'it', although I do not see too many comments to date.
Males grow older 'gracefully', women have landmarks. Maybe that is good. There is no denying that the 'pause' is a major event that sets in place all sorts of reflective activity. Maybe it is good we have something to blame things on in life that we have difficulty explaining - a sort of absolution. The danger is in seeing this as a loss - certainly we need to acknowledge the passing years, but bless them rather than curse. Yes, reproductive potential is to all extents and purposes gone, but all sorts of new opportunities open up, including of course a form of liberation from inconveniences and unexpected children. All passages in life are both doors that close and doors that open.
Perhaps it is time women collectively celebrated menopause like a Bat Mitzvah, a rite of recognition of achievement. In the past this has intermittedly called 'croning' adopting a pejorative term, and embracing it as attribute.
So, Sue, we salute you on achieving a time of grace, go forth and blossom in a new sense of maturity.
Michael
